How I passed the SCRUM product owner certification (PSPO I)

Most organisations are getting to grip with the Agile methodology concept these days and it's a good idea to get yourself certified and add a shiny new line on your CV.

2 years ago, I passed the SCRUM master certification and this year I took the product owner (PSPO I) certification. In between, the scrum guide has changed a bit (in 2020) so this was an opportunity to revise the concepts.

I'm sharing my course notes here and the exam prep tips that got me to success.

A bit of theory

First of all, visit the scrum.org website and download your copy of the official scrum guide.

The scrum guide is a short pdf that you should memorise very quickly.

Two thirds of the PSPO I exam are on the basics of scrum, so make sure you get them right.

Second, read the various articles from the product owner learning path (ignore the book reviews).

Make sure any material you read is relevant to scrum edition 2020.

Here's my notes from studying, they should contain all the theory bits you need.

Time to practice

Once you've studied the theory, time to practice with some mock exams.

The scrum website offers us some free practice with the open assessment page.

The scrum open is the mock exam for the scrum master certification. It is useful to take this mock exam for the PSPO I certification as most of the questions are related to the basic principles of scrum.

The test is made of 30 questions; with the real exam, you'll get 80 questions with a pass rate of 85%. The important thing to know is that the 30 questions from the mock exam will show up in the real test. So if you practice those questions until you get a 100% pass rate every time, that's already 30 answers correct out of 80 for you !!

Next thing, take the mock exam for product owner. It's made of (only) 15 questions that, again will be asked in the real exam, so make sure you get a 100% pass rate for those.

Finally, here's an additional resource for scrum quizzes: Scrum Quizzes – Mikhail Lapshin (mlapshin.com). Watch out that the questions are based on an older version of the scrum guide. However, you should definitely do those quizzes as they cover additional topics compared to scrum.org.

With that, you should be all set to take the PSPO I certification.

Good luck !
